Fourth Place finish for Jody on ELMS Return

It was fantastic to be back on track after 9 months out of the car, and also great to be back with JMW Motorsport. Race week started with a couple of days testing at the championship’s official Prologue to shake things down and have a run on the new for 2020 Goodyear rubber. We made some good progress and were all feeling good with the car going into the race weekend.

Temperatures were higher than previous years, and that coupled with lap times being a bit faster than the year before, was putting extra stress on the tyres. A lot of cars were having punctures, so we had to compromise a bit and be careful for the first few laps to not put too much unnecessary stress through the tyre so that they would last. However, we’d done a couple of long runs, and the car was feeling good, so were looking forward to a strong weekend.

I didn’t do lots of running in the free practice sessions to give my teammates some more time in the car, then it was onto qualifying, which turned out to be very close; we would start in 7th position for the race on Sunday.

I would be taking the final stint in the race, so could only watch for the first 3 hours or so, which was tough! The car was in 5th place when it was brought in and handed over to me. We managed to jump a spot in the pits thanks to great work by the JMW Motorsport guys, but unfortunately I got dragged past down the long Mistral Straight by the Aston Martin on the outlap. After a few laps of taking it easy over kerbs to preserve the tyres, it was time to push.We had good pace, especially towards the end of the stint, until I got a puncture with just over a lap to go of the race, meaning I had to drive very slowly round to the chequered flag! We still managed to bring the car home in P4, which was an excellent result given our dramas at the end.

Thanks to JMW Motorsport for giving me the opportunity to join them again, and my teammates Hunter and Finlay for great stints. Hopefully we can be reunited again in the future. I’m not sure what my plans are for the rest of the year yet, but I will be back at a race track soon!
